His character Mahadev Bhosale heads a special force within the department. He knows he has been hired to clean out corruption from the city, but understands that once his job is done, he will be thrown out. “So he wants to make the most of it till he lasts. Rana’s (Daggubati) character stands in my way, so there is conflict between the two of them,” explains Dutt. This is the first time he has worked with the South actor and says,”Rana is a very focused actor and a wonderful kid. We shared some great moments together – moments of disagreements on-screen and bonding off-screen.”

About his other co-star in the film – Amitabh Bachchan – he says, “Sir plays a politican named Shivajirao Gaikwad. I am in awe of him. He is a legend and I am lucky that I have been in so many films with him. The way he gets into his character and performs, and the way he makes everyone so comfortable on the sets, is amazing. I did the song Kammo with him. I am an awkward dancer and he understood that and told me to dance just like he did.”

Sanju is excited about the action he has done in the film. “I loved doing hardcore action after so many years. Especially the climax sequence, in which Rana and I engage in hand-to-hand combat, and some tough sequences on wires at the Yerawada jail.” He adds that he has mouthed some Bambaiya style gaalis in the film, saying, “Bhonsale cusses a lot! He has a tough attitude and dominates every situation. One of my favourite dialogues in the film is ‘Duniya mein log acche ya bure nahi hote -sirf samajhdar ya ch**** hote hai!’ Another hard-hitting line that people will remember is, ‘Woh bahar aake hamein thokte hai, hum andar jaake unko thokenge!’ Department is a hard-hitting, gritty action drama – something I haven’t done before!”

Directed by Ram Gopal Varma and produced by Viacom 18 Motion Pictures and Uberoi Line Productions, Department hits theatres today.

Tuesday, May 15th, 2012 5:04:16 by Imran Shaukat Khan

Bollywood superstar Aamir Khan’s debut TV show ‘Satyamev Jayate’ is garnering a lot of appreciation from the audiences, as the show deals with the sensitive social issues backed by statistics. However, this time going gaga over him is none other than Katrina Kaif, who will be seen playing a lead role opposite to him in ‘Dhoom 3’.

In the first two episodes of the show, Aamir created awareness among the people about the topics like female foeticide and child sex abuse and like many others out there Katrina has also commended his effort.

Thought Katrina admitted that she has not been able to see the show herself yet, she said she has heard a lot about it from her friends. The actress further added that Aamir always does things of high quality.

“I did not get to see the show…unfortunately I was working. But lot of my friends have seen it and lot of them have tweeted also about the show…saying it is one of the best TV shows in recent times. I have heard about the topics that he has shown..it is amazing. Whatever he does is of high quality and he has lived up to expectations,” Katrina told reporters here last evening, on the sidelines of a ‘Nakshatra’ event.

In the meantime, Katrina was asked whether if she too has plans for making an appearance on the small screen, on which the 27-year-old beauty remarked she will consider doing a show, if she gets something making sense.

Katrina said, “I don’t know..it has to be something that should make sense for me and I could do well. Like Aamir has done this show brilliantly so if you can do it brilliantly then why not. I would do a show on which I think I can add something to it…then only I would attempt it.”

Well, all said and done, Aamir Khan, more commonly known as Perfectionist, has certainly impressed everyone with ‘Satyamev Jayate’.

Aamir and Katrina will be seen together in Aditya Chopra’s ‘Dhoom 3’, which is scheduled to hit the cinemas next year.

Katina Kaif is presently working with the three leading Khans of Bollywood, ‘Ek Tha Tiger’ with Salman Khan, an untitled love story with Shahrukh Khan and ‘Dhoom 3’ with Aamir Khan. Having got the opportunity of working with the three Khans, she sounds a bit possessive. She said that she won’t let anyone else to work with them.

“This doesn’t make sense to me. It is unfair,” Katrina told reporters here when she was asked to pick her favourite Khan.

Speaking about her experience of working with each of them, “If suppose if you will ask them to choose one of the actresses, even I will feel bad. Everyone is different. All three of them are icons and legends in their own way. I am fortunate enough to work with them. It’s been great so far.

“If I had the chance, I would not allow anyone to work with them. But that is not possible as you cannot stop anyone from working with them,” she added.

She describes the experience of working with all three Khans in the following manner.

“With Salman, I am working for the third time and I had an amazing time. With Shah Rukh the shooting is going on and I h-ad fun. It was good working with him,” she said.

Katrina is excited at shooting an item song for her soon-to-be-released “Ek Tha Tiger” and said: “I don’t know what you call an item number. It is a very interesting song. I will shoot for it tomorrow (Tuesday),” Katrina said.

Be it Agneepath, the recent Ishaqzaade, Wanted, Singham, Bodyguard or the upcoming Rowdy Rathore, action has returned with a bang on the big screen. Not to be left behind, the small-screen too has become action packed in the last one year. There are already dedicated channels like AXN — one of the first action adventure channel to be launched in India followed byUTV Action, Zee Action and the recently launched Sonic targetted at kids aged 10 plus, in the market. Soon, anotherchannel, Thrill, is poised to make an entry. Even History Channel in its revamped avatar has taken the action, adventure route to trace unexplored territories.

Obviously, the appetite for action has grown among the Indian audiences. Says Sunil Kumaran, Business Head, BIG RTL Thrill, “We see action movies clearly dominating the ratings charts. When you talk about English entertainment, action reality shows have performed excellently and thriller shows have started featuring in the top rated shows on mainstream Hindi general entertainment channels (GECs).” Nina Elavia Jaipuria, Executive VP GM, Sonic attributes the demand to what she calls the ‘wired generation’. “Everything is about speed and technology. Even the two minute noodle is slow for this generation, which is seeking shortcuts and thrill, 24/7. That’s why you find them snacking on edgy shows like Roadies, Fear Factor, Man Vs Wild or CID.”
It was to tap into this segment that channels like Zee Action, which shows Bollywood action as well as dubbed films, UTV Action dubbed in Hindi and Telugu were launched. Says Manasi Sapre, Director Programming and Acquisitions, Movie channels UTV, “Action has a wide appeal and in the last two-three years, there has been a surge in this genre. In fact, when it comes to action, Hollywood is the yardstick. Who can forget Matrix style of action. Action is in our blood too. Think Sholay and you’ll know what I mean.”

Lately, even the top-rated shows on the Hindi GECs, specially Sony, oscillate between the detective series CID or reality based crime drama Crime Patrol. Recently, Colors introduced their first thriller Chhal at primetime. The latest news is that Anil Kapoor who starred in the Hollywood action series 24 is all set to remake it in Hindi. For that matter, regular family dramas and historicals too have their share of thrills through car chase sequences, stunts and battles.

Clearly, action is where all the TV drama is today, with channels going all out to provide edgy entertainment!

Especially the climax sequence in which Rana and I engage in hand-to-hand combat, and a lot of very tough action scenes on wires, and the Yerawada Jail scene. I was known as an action hero, so it felt good to come back as one again.”

He also admits he has mouthed some Mumbai-style gaalis in the film. “Bhonsale cusses a lot,” Sanju grins, “He has a tough attitude and dominates his way through every situation. One of my favorite dialogues is, ‘duniya mein log acche ya bure nahi hote – sirf samajhdar ya ch**** hote hain!’ Another one that people will remember is, ‘woh bahar aake hamein thokte hain, hum andar jaake unko thokenge!’ Mahadev’s attitude speaks for itself and he operates in his own style. Department is a hard-hitting, realistic, raw, gritty action-drama – something I haven’t done before!”

Asked about the favourite cop characters played by him, he says, “Thanedaar and Kurukshetra.” And in Hollywood? “Heat with Robert De Niro, Al Pacino and Van Kilmer. It’s the ultimate in cops-and-robbers.”

Directed by Ram Gopal Varma and Produced by Viacom 18 Motion Pictures and Uberoi Line Productions, Department hits theatres today.

Mumbai: Newbie actress Parineeti Chopra, who is basking in the glory of her latest film ‘Ishaqzaade’, says she is ready to don a bikini. Parineeti, 24, started her career with ‘Ladies vs Ricky Bahl’ in 2011 and said she has set no limitations for herself as an actress and will also do intimate scenes if script demands.

“I have no limitations and that is because I believe in myself. When you finish reading a script and you still remember about that one kissing scene and think that the script is good… But just because it has a kissing scene, hence you will not do it. This means that with what intention the writer must have wrote that scene, you have not understood it,” Parneeti told PTI.

Even in ‘Ishaqzaade’, there are few intimate scenes between her and co-star Arjun Kapoor.

“When I was reading this (Ishaqzaade) script, I did not think of love making or kissing scene. The placement of the scene in the movie is right and it is not that it has been put for fun or for everyone to enjoy.”

“If you like the script for what it is… if the intention of the writer is to have a lovemaking scene, or kissing scene or bikini or dance or whatever, I will do it. I feel as an actor one must not have any inhibition,” she said.

‘Ishaqzaade’ is a romantic drama directed by Habib Faisal and produced by Aditya Chopra of Yash Raj Films. While the film is the launch pad for Arjun, it is the second outing for Faisal as a director after ‘Do Dooni Chaar’.

The film released on May 11 is doing well at the box office and has collected over Rs 16 crore in its first weekend. It is believed that the film is made at a budget of Rs 25 crore.

The rustic love story has turned out to be fifth biggest first day opener after ‘Agneepath’ (Rs 23 crore), ‘Housefull 2′ (Rs 14 crore), ‘Agent Vinod’ (Rs 10 crore) and ‘Jannat 2′ (Rs 8.52 crore).

“The film did well. It is not that you have to believe in it (number game).. there will be numbers involved. As you are making a film you will make money or not make money.”

“Numbers can only tell you if people are going to watch the film or not. He (Arjun) had told me we must see the result from Monday onwards. It is not about see how much money we are making, it is like more people are watching the film even on weekdays,” Parineeti said.

“Every film has an audience be it actors or directors or other factors.. there is no factor in this film that would have attracted the audience to theatres. So for this film we are very proud,” she added.

The actress is also elated with the response and appreciation for the movie coming from all quarters, including the makers Aditya and Yash Chopra.

“For me the biggest compliment was when Aditya and Yash Chopra liked our work. Their compliment matters a lot to us. They appreciated both of us a lot,” Parineeti said.

She has also clarified that she has not signed any film with Arjun again or with directors Pradeep Sarkar and Shimit Amin.

Actor Sanjay Dutt, who begun this year on a superhit note with Agneepath, is hoping that his next release follows suit. There is, however, no pressure of living up to the 100 crore figure at the BO, says the actor. “As an actor, I would want all my films to do well. But I don’t think about the end result. An actor can’t survive if he allows himself to be carried away either by success or failure,” he says. Unfazed by the number game or star status at the BO, the actor adds that they just don’t matter. “I am Sanjay Dutt! I have never been ruled by numbers,” asserts the actor, who, post a slew of comedies last year, now seems to be focussed on action completely.

Though the actor insists that all his releases this year being action fare is pure coincidence, he does admit that the genre is really close to his heart. “I was introduced as an action hero, so doing hard-core action again is like homecoming for me,” recalls the actor, who was in fact one of the first action heroes in Bollywood to flaunt his muscled body too. Ask him about being a trend-setter of sorts and he agrees that it’s heartening to see actors paying much attention to their physical fitness, but reveals that it was very different when he had just started. “Today every hero is flaunting his muscles and six pack. But back then my filmmakers would not understand my fascination with the gym or work-outs. ‘Hero hai na, muscle ka kya karega’, was the usual stance,” smiles Sanjay. As for his return to action, the actor insists that like him, action too has come a long way. “It’s much safer now with all the cable work and technical aspects, but apart from that the thrill is just the same. I enjoy it just as much,” shares the actor, who will be seen doing some hard-core action in the upcoming Ram Gopal Varma film Department too. The action flick also sees him share screen space with actor Amitabh Bachchan yet again.

“It’s always a wonderful experience working with Bachchan sir. You always come away enriched,” he says about the senior actor.
As for his peers, the actor feels that more than competition, they are friends. Waving off all talks of campism and actors not being friends, Sanjay says, “I don’t think there’s any campism here. You may work more with a certain set, because of your comfort level, but there’s no ‘teaming up to put someone down’ agenda.” As for his own friends, the actor points out that some of his closest friends are in the industry. “Sure, I have been let down in the past, but apart from those few, all my friends have always been there for me just as I have been there for them,” he adds. There’s no being caught in the tug-of-war for him between frenemies, actors Salman Khan and Shah Rukh Khan either, reveals the actor. “Both are like my brothers and very close to my heart. Where’s the question of awkwardness or choosing one over another?” quips Sanjay.
